Methuen Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus was formed in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1882 in order to provide assistance to members and their families, mostly low-income immigrant Catholics. Founded by the Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney, members provided financial aid to the widows and children of members, as many families who lost their breadwinner often lost t... heir homes. It was also created to provide a fraternal organization for Catholics during a time when most fraternal organizations barred Catholics from joining. Membership was open to Catholic men aged 18 or older. Members were encouraged to promote fellowship in their respective communities through charitable works and social welfare programs. The order developed into a fraternal service organization which today has branches throughout United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico, the Philippines, the Dominican Republic, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Guatemala, Guam and Saipan. Membership consists of four different degrees, each exemplifying a different principle of the Order.
