The Hale House Foundation Inc. is a transitional program to assist men over the age of 18 with substance abuse problems to recover in a safe recovery residence setting until they are ready to assume responsibility by readjusting to society and resume independent living. The Hale House offers programs without restrictions on the length of stay to accommodate individual recovery. It holds to a strict zero tolerance policy for alcohol or drug use as well as any unwillingness to cooperate with foundation rules beneficial to the entire recovering community. Started in 1990 with a single house, the Foundation has now expanded to several houses. Three programs were developed to help men in different "stages" of recovery. Each entering person is reviewed by recovering staff members to assess their needs and periodic evaluations are made to mark their progress. The Hale House is strongly supported by the community and on the 7th Anniversary of its birth, the Hale House was commemorated by Augusta's Mayor Larry Sconyers as he declared September 23, 1998 Hale House Foundation Day.
