Description:

Representatives from the Educate Texas Leadership Team recently met with KnowledgeWorks, a Cincinnati-based social enterprise that develops and implements innovative education initiatives nationwide. KnowledgeWorks is focused on education reform via three subsidiaries including New Tech Network, Strive and EDWorks. In the Winter 2011 issue of the Stanford Social Innovation Review, John Kania and Mark Kramer identified a different approach to large scale social change. While most philanthropic organizations had been working in isolation with limited results, organizations like Strive, were creating a collective impact in education by aligning resources, measuring what worked and requiring broader cross-sector coordination. A subsidiary of KnowledgeWorks, the Strive Network was created in 2011 to help scale the success of the collective impact work already on the ground in Cincinnati. The overarching principle of Collective Impact is that the social sector largely works in isolated segments of need - each foundation has its own mission, its own purpose, its own cause. And although the outcome desired may be identical or similar in scope and breadth, rarely do foundations work together to attain it. Scalable education reform has been elusive for the U.S. - in spite of heroic efforts on the part of educators, administrators, nonprofits and others to create some system-wide progress. What if, instead of working in isolation, these nonprofit organizations united around a backbone organization and agreed to accountability measures that measured what worked - using those measures to then determine funding and dedication of resources? Creating an organization whose only goal is to coordinate the process it helps to facilitate removes narrowly defined mission statements and agendas allowing all efforts to be focused on achieving the common goal - in this case, student success. The implications for reimagining how the social sector can move from isolated impact to collective impact is far reaching and, we hope, transformative. For a quick slice of how Strive coordinates efforts of nonprofits watch the six minute TEDxCincy video featuring Jeff Edmondson, President of Strive.
