Founded in 1995, Collaborative Care of Abington was established to address the psychological aspects of medical illness and disability. The focus has always incorporated a holistic approach, assessing the whole person, as well as bringing alternative coping skills into the management of illness and disability, in addition to traditional psychiatry. The stress of emotional or physical illness can compound the patient's physical pain or function. The clinicians at Collaborative Care work with our psychiatrist and nurse practitioners to diminish cycles of emotional or physical distress. This creates pathways for hope and tolerance of the psychological or medical process. Frequently, it is recommended that patients are treated with holistic mental health techniques, such as guided imagery or mindfulness meditation. These techniques can decrease the cycles of pain or psychological reenactment of trauma. It is our belief that through collaboration, patients' medical and mental well-being is better balanced. *All patients must be seen first, and continually, by a psychotherapist before being seen by our psychiatrist or a nurse practitioner. Because of this policy, patients have less acute medical visits or complications, lowering their overall health care complications.
