Who is China National Rice Research Institute

China National Rice Research Institute (CNRRI) is an integrative research institute of basic rice science in China. It was established in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province (E-map) as approved by the Chinese State Council in June 1981, under the dual leadership of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and the Zhejiang Provincial Government. CNRRI focuses on basic and applicable researches with priority on solving significant scientific and technical problems in rice production. Engaging in rice research at population, individual, tissue, cell, and molecular levels, its mission is to contribute food security, nutrition improvement and environment protection. The institute has a total of 761 staff members, among them there are 147 senior, middle level scientists. CNRRI occupies an area of 494 ha, and consists of labs, a rice seed-engineering center and an experimental farm. The organization of research system includes Chinese National Center for Rice Improvement, Rice Technology R&D Center, Rice Product Quality Inspection and Supervision Testing Center of the Ministry of Agriculture, Science & Technology Information Center, and State Key Lab of Rice Biology. Since the foundation, the Institute has gained 2 first-class prize of National Science & Technology Progress Award, 76 awards of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), provinces and ministries. To date, 132 achievements in scientific research have been obtained and more than 100 new rice varieties (combinations) been released. CNRRI has sponsored important national academic journals including Chinese Journal of Rice Science, China Rice, and Rice Science (in English). The library of the Institute has approximately over 50,000 volumes of books. Benefiting from China's reform and opening policy, CNRRI has received support from various international organizations, including the World Bank, UNDP, IRRI, and the Rockefeller Foundation.
