The Campbell River Art Gallery is a young organization with an energized staff and dynamic programs. The Gallery opened in its downtown facility in 1994 and has since grown to offer more than 10 exhibitions annually in a choice of three exhibitions spaces. Our annual visitation is over 19,000. Our mandate is to stimulate thought, understanding, curiosity, involvement and discussion of contemporary visual art. We also offer over 40 workshops, classes and artists' talks in our 110 sq. meter studio. Our permanent collection represents western Canadian artists and our reference library covers an expansive range of topics. Our programming extends beyond our facility to include art classes in schools and at community events, like the annual Garden and Art Tour. The Gallery is operated by a non-profit society, with a membership of 340 people. A board of trustees is elected from our membership, representing practicing artists and community leaders. Exhibitions are selected through a committee of staff and guest artists. The latter change every year to bring fresh perspectives to the selection process. We strive to create a mix of exhibitions (by mid-career and senior artists) in the two main halls , from installation and new media to more traditional forms. Our satellite cases are an excellent venue for emerging local artists and students. The Gallery has a small gift shop, featuring work by Vancouver Island artisans. In Nov/Dec the retail outlet expands into the full gallery, when the Christmas Market transforms the space into a glittering gift boutique of handcrafted work.
