Based in Los Angeles, Automat Pictures is a multi-award winning production company specializing in the production of DVD Added Value, studio EPKs (electronic presskit), original television programming, web content, and feature films. Founded by President & CEO Jeffrey Schwarz in 2000, Automat was launched in the early days of the DVD format. Since his company's inception, Schwarz and his staff have produced content on everything from cult classics like "A Nightmare on Elm Street" to blockbusters like "Men in Black 2," family favorites like "The Princess Bride" to action titles like "The Punisher. In 2007, "Hairspray" was named one of Time Magazine's Top 10 DVDs of the year and the documentaries were called "" by critic Richard Corliss. "Mysteries of Love," Schwarz' documentary on David Lynch's "Blue Velvet" was called "...dazzling" by Entertainment Weekly. "Fighting for Care," produced for the "John Q" DVD, was singled out for a Special Achievement Award at the 2002 DVD Entertainment Conference & Showcase. Automat's documentaries have also gone on to play in film festivals around the world. "People Like Us: Making Philadelphia," premiered at the 2003 San Francisco Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, and "Whether You Like it or Not: The Story of Hedwig," played in over a dozen film festivals in the U.S. and worldwide, including those in Brazil, S. Africa, New Zealand, Korea, and the UK. Expanding on its home entertainment expertise, Automat Pictures also produces original television programming. Under the "HBO First Look" banner, the company has contributed episodes profiling such films as "Hairspray," "Fracture," "Jarhead," and "Son of the Mask. For the Starz / Enchore networks, Automat created the original documentaries "Sex and the Cinema," "In the Gutter," "Shooting the Police: Cops on Film" and "Hitchcocked! "Reservoir Dogs Revisited," a celebration of Quentin Tarantino's classic, and "Still Swingin'," a retrospective on the indie favorite, were both produced for IFC in 2005. Automat produced several TV commercial spots for The Sundance Channel featuring comedian Donal Logue. Automat's first independent feature documentary, "Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story," won the Audience Award at the American Film Institute's AFI Fest in 2007, and has gone on to win multiple awards around the country. "Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon," produced in 2008, has enjoyed a successful run on the film festival circuit before being released on DVD by TLA Entertainment.
