Who is Al Ahram Beverages

Al Ahram Beverages Company (ABC) dominates the Egyptian market for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beer, wine, and spirits. Privatized in 1997, ABC has transformeditself from a government-run monopoly brewer into a consumer-driven full-fledged beverages company and one of the world's leading producers of non-alcoholic malt beverages. Entrepreneur Ahmed Zayat led a group of international institutional investors in purchasing ABC from the government of Egypt. As Executive Chairman, Mr. Zayat assembled a high-caliber senior management team with multinational experience. ABC's subsequent achievements have earned it the title of "Egypt's model of privatization". Since 1997, the company's real value has grown through the accumulation of earnings and growth-driving investments. Consumers have benefited from a vastly expanded range of high quality beverages and from broader distribution. ABC's employees have benefited as well from significant training, performance-based compensation and a stock ownership program, allowing thousands to become real owners of ABC. From nine stock-keeping units (SKUs) at the time of privatization, ABC today produces more than 230 SKUs including alcoholic beer, non-alcoholic malt beverages, carbonated soft drinks, wine and spirits. ABC's proprietary brands include Stella (the beer of Egypt since 1897) and Fayrouz (the top-selling flavoured malt beverage). Its lines also include the non alcoholic malt beverages Birell under license as well as RC soft drinks under license from Royal Crown. In 1999, ABC bought the Gianaclis Winery (Egypt's highly profitable wine monopoly) from the government. Using its experience revolutionizing quality and segmenting the market, ABC today produces several brands of quality red, white, rosé and sparkling and premium wines from Egyptian vineyards. In February 2001, ABC acquired its sole Egyptian competitor, El Gouna Beverages, thus securing its dominance in the local market. Through this transaction, ABC gained Gouna's local spirits brands. In 2002, recognizing the strength of ABC's business and the global potential of its non-alcoholic malt beverages, Heineken International acquired ABC for $287 million in the largest private-sector M&A transaction in Egypt. This price plus debt assigned ABC a total enterprise value of $360 million. The tender price of $14 per share represented a premium of around 100% to the pre-deal trading range at a time of global uncertainty. The acquisition, dubbed "the deal of the decade", also raised Egypt's profile for foreign direct investment at a sensitive time for the region. The Heineken Int'l beer product has been successfully produced in Egypt through AL Ahram Beverages Company. Currently, ABC produces a wide range of premium quality spirits with highest international standards under license from Master Distillers Ltd. - New Brunswick, Canada and William McLeod & Sons- Edinburgh, Scotland. Our Premium spirits include RTD (Ready to Drink) spirits including flavored ID Edge and Chill. Also flavored Vodka in addition to Whisky and Gin through United Distillery Group (UDG), Egypt's first sophisticated state of the art new distillery to address unsatisfied demand due to high import tariffs. With the assistance of the best technical experts in the world (Carlsberg's brewing consultants Danbrew, and Groupe Ginestet, of Bordeaux for wine), ABC has tripled its production capacity since privatization and raised quality to international standards. In April 2001, ABC inaugurated its Greenfield brewery at El Obour City, a $50 million state-of-the-art facility that replaces breweries dating back to 1914. At one million hectoliters, El Obour brewery is not only the largest in the region but one of the most modern and technologically advanced globally.Read More
