We were working with one of our clients towards the end of 2016, reviewing the progress they've made in the last three years, since we started working with them. At the start of 2014 the business had lost its way slightly. It had no clear direction and had lost focus on what the business was really about. We helped the Directors to create a Business Plan for 2014 that gave them the direction and clarity that was needed. As a result, they had a very successful year. At the start of 2015 we amended the Plan slightly for the coming year and did the same again in January 2016. As a result, the company is more successful and more profitable than ever before. So when we sat down with the Directors recently, at one of our regular support meetings, we asked them "What next? Do you want to keep ticking over as you are? Do you want to grow? Where do you want to be in five years' time?" One thing we've noticed when working with companies that become more successful, is that they can also become complacent. If it is too easy to bring in new clients and to make a good profit, it can be tempting to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labours. The problem with this approach to business is that it allows you to take your eye off the ball too easily. Issues can slip passed without being noticed or dealt with. Clients can leave because your level of service has dropped, without you realising. Even when your business is strong, you still need a focus. You need something to drive you in the right direction; something that keeps you thinking all the time about how to improve your business, whether you're looking to grow it or carry on as you are, providing a top quality service to your clients. So we encouraged our clients to think about where they wanted to be in five years. By then, the business will have been running under their direction for 21 years - no mean feat. After a bit of soul searching, the Directors told us that they would like to be in a position to leave the business in five years, if they chose to. This could be through selling some or all of the business or handing it on to someone else, giving the Directors greater choice over what to do next. They felt inspired by being able to develop their business for the next five years, to get it to the point where they could move on and take on new challenges. What this means is that they will need to spend the next five years developing a business that can be sold or handed on. Selling a business takes time and developing a business that is fit to be sold can take even longer. This means that we're now helping our clients to put in place a long term plan that will help them to reach their goal. We will review it regularly over the coming years, to make sure that progress is on track to meet that goal. This will give them a much better result than if they just tell us, five years down the line, that they suddenly want to sell up and move on.
