Description:

The Orange County Chapter of the American Red Cross has been named one of the best-performing chapters in theUnited States by the national American Red Cross, headquartered in Washington, D.C. To achieve this outstanding designation, the chapter was evaluated on a comprehensive set of performance criteria through its Chapter Performance Standards system. The Orange County Chapter, which is made of up 43 employees and over 2,000 volunteers, supports the Orange County community by providing lifesaving health and safety training, responding to disaster incidents, assisting members of the military and their families. "This is an outstanding achievement for our chapter," said Stephen Cooke, "This award is the direct result of the hard work of our employees and volunteers including the members or our local board, and would not have been possible without the support of the members of the Orange County community." Last year alone, the residents of Orange County participated in 10,187 of CPR and other training courses, responded to 154 disasters including Laguna Beach landslides and deployed 300 volunteers to hurricanes Katrina/Rita/Wilma. The Orange County chapter also reached out to 844 military families in need with 866 services such as emergency communication, financial assistance and counseling. All of this is possible thanks to the generous gift of time, blood and money provided by the residents of the Orange County community. The American Red Cross is where people mobilize to help their neighborsâ€"across the street, across the country and across the worldâ€"in emergencies. Each year, in communities large and small, victims of some 70,000 disasters turn to neighbors familiar and newâ€"the nearly 1 million volunteers and 35,000 employees of the Red Cross. Through more than 800 locally supported chapters, more than 15 million people gain the skills they need to prepare for and respond to emergencies in their homes, communities and world. Some 4 million people give bloodâ€"the gift of lifeâ€"through the Red Cross, making it the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. The Red Cross helps thousands of U.S. service members separated from their families by military duty stay connected. As part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, a global network of 181 national societies, the Red Cross helps restore hope and dignity to the world's most vulnerable people. An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work.
