At Didcot Girls' School we pride ourselves on the quality of the care, guidance and support we provide our young people as they make the transition from their primary school to become part of our inclusive school community. Our transition process begins each year by offering parents and students the opportunity to come and visit our school during our Open Evening or one of our Open Mornings in October. Over the following months, members of our Learning Support Department visit primary schools regularly to begin to form links with students who might benefit from additional support through the transition process. The Learning Support Department works alongside our Student Managers (highly qualified, non-teaching student support workers) in order to ensure the process of transition is as smooth as possible for each student and her family. In the spring of Year 6, families who have applied for a place at Didcot Girls' School receive the first of their official communications from our admissions team to confirm the offer of a place. From this point onwards we work hard with our partner primary schools to ensure that we know as much information about each student as possible in order to support her move to our community and to enable her to be successful upon her arrival. Each year the Head of Year 7 and the Assistant Headteacher responsible for Standards and Culture in Lower School make a series of visits to primary schools to meet with both students and parents to answer any further questions that they might have about the move to Didcot Girls' School. Feedback from parents tells us that these visits are very much appreciated as a means of allaying any concerns and easing the transition for the girls. These visits to the primary schools are held at the end of the primary school day and have consistently been highlighted by parents as a strength of our transition process. In late June, staff at Didcot Girls' School welcome the upcoming Year 7 students into the school for two 'Welcome Days'. The Welcome Days offer students an opportunity to get to know the other students in their tutor groups and to experience what life and learning is like as part of our community. Our first Welcome Day gives each student an opportunity to sample life at Didcot Girls' School and we ensure that they experience key lessons, such as those offered by our high-performing English, Maths and Science departments. During the second Welcome Day our two specialist areas, Modern Foreign Languages & Business & Economics provide the focus for a 'Super Learning Day'. This year students were able to experience a range of languages throughout the day and were introduced to a series of ICT skills that will be of benefit throughout Year 7. The Welcome Days are preceded by a Welcome Evening for girls and their parents. For the girls this is an opportunity to meet their tutor and to find out about the exciting activities they will undertake during the Welcome Days. For parents there is the opportunity to listen to a talk by the Headteacher, Assistant Headteacher, our Lead Co-Ordinator for AG&T students, and the incoming Head of Year 7, as well as to meet key support staff including your daughter's tutor. The transition process at Didcot Girls' School is recognised as a leading example of how well primary and secondary schools can work in partnership to support students and families over both the short and long term for academic success and personal development. We very much look forward to welcoming you to our community in the near future.
