SAINT JOHN, N.B. , Saint John Member of Parliament Paul Zed is pleased that the Province of New Brunswick, the Province of Nova Scotia and the Government of Canada have committed funds to the continuation of the Saint John-Digby Ferry service."I have always said that the Saint John-Digby Ferry constitutes a Marine Superhighway from the emerging Saint John energy hub to Nova Scotia lumber and fishing communities," said Mr. Zed."This is a key piece of national transportation infrastructure, just like highways and rail lines. It facilitates trade and tourism and it deserves government support." "I want to commend New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham, Nova Scotia Premier Rodney MacDonald, and Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon for providing funding for the service," said Mr. Zed."I also want to thank Peter MacKay, the Minister for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency for his leadership on this file. The support of all three governments is crucial to maintaining our transportation infrastructure." The Government of Canada will invest $11.1 million towards ensuring the continuation of the Saint John-Digby Ferry until January 31, 2011, while the Provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia will each be contributing $2 million over the next two years. The total government re-investment is $18.1 million.Bay Ferries will continue to operate the service during this time."I have written to the Minister of Transport on this issue and I have raised it in the House of Commons during Question Period, and I am happy that the concerns of the citizens of Saint John have been heard," said Mr. Zed.

Don't Cut Service at Rothesay Post Office, says Zed - Saint John MP Paul Zed demands halt to service changes before consultations completed with community and employees

    Date: August 13, 2008

OTTAWA, ON , Canada Post has announced it will cut Saturday service at the Rothesay Post Office without consulting the residents of Rothesay. Paul Zed, MP for Saint John, Rothesay, and Quispamsis demands that Canada Post halts proceeding with this decision before hearing from its shareholders, the people of Canada in our community. "I was very surprised to learn that the Canada Post Corp. arbitrarily decided to change 100 years of Rothesay service. I spoke to Mayor Bill Bishop this morning who was equally surprised and disappointed by the decision. We are calling on Canada Post to have a moratorium on service changes until consultation has been completed with the community and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) at a public meeting," said Mr. Zed. Late last fall, Mr. Zed received over 400 letters from concerned constituents expressing their support to keep Canada Post's mandate intact to protect the quality of service. The letters urged Mr. Zed to fight a bill that would reduce the mandate of Canada Post and threaten the viability of many local post offices. Mr. Zed is currently leading the charge against this bill in Ottawa. "This certainly looks like the first step towards cut backs in service for smaller communities in Canada, and proves our concerns regarding the quality of Canada Post service going forward were justified. I wonder if this is happening in other parts of Canada," the MP added. "Claiming they are committed to Atlantic Canada, Prime Minister Harper arrives in New Brunswick this Thursday to rally his troops for a phantom election, yet today, we learn that his government is doing nothing to protect our basic postal services," said Mr. Zed.
