Director and DVD: New Tools Promise to Break the... - [Cached Version]
Published on: 8/15/2000    Last Visited: 8/15/2000

Macromedia's director of product management for Director and Shockwave Player, Doug Wyrick, agrees that DVD offers Director developers a great, high-bandwidth medium to deliver rich media content. But for now, Wyrick seems content to emphasize simply the capacity of DVD-ROM rather than the added capabilities of the DVD-Video format. There are many cases where the quality of DVD-Video can enhance multimedia applications, Wyrick acknowledges.Combining interactivity with full-motion video and AC-3 sound gives you a platform that is optimal for applications such as learning and simulation and entertainment-based content. But as with many new technologies, incompatibilities abound, and at present, few of our developers are willing or able to rely on available devices and drivers to deliver DVD-Video content in the computer space. We expect this situation to improve substantially as the technology matures over the coming year, and when we see more standards, we can build tools to create the most compelling titles..

In the meantime, Wyrick says that developers who wish to play back MPEG video will need to use a third-party Xtra.Macromedia is working with several companies in the development of Xtras that allow control of DVD/MPEG from Director and Shockwave, he explains. We also have an Xtras Developers Kit available at http : //www.macromedia.com / support/xtras.There are already a number of Xtras available for both Macintosh and Windows ; the best place to start looking is http : //www.macromedia.com / software/xtras/director..

We feel that the Director community is best-served by multiple DVD authoring solutions, Wyrick continues, because multiple vendors means competitive feature sets and lower prices. This could disappear if we were to step in early with our own solution, which would be particularly troubling when you consider that some development houses already specialize in MPEG/DVD, and may be better-suited than we are to focus on all the emergent standards and platforms. When it makes business sense, we intend to include robust DVD authoring capabilities right in the Director box.
