John Warner Ray, M.D.Director, Radiation Oncology Services, Inc.
A native of Atlanta, Dr. Ray graduated from Emory University Medical School in 1966 and completed an internship and a year of medical residency at Wilford United States Air Force Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.Subsequently, he served in the United States Air Force as a Flight Medical Officer prior to entering his residency in radiation oncology at the University of California, San Francisco. He obtained board certification in 1975 and returned to Atlanta as Director of Radiation Oncology at South Fulton Medical Center. At South Fulton, he developed a keen interest in community-based radiation oncology programs that would blend the highly technical aspects of radiation therapy delivery systems with compassionate care in a setting close to home.
In 1983, Dr. Ray developed the first free-standing radiation therapy center in Georgia. This center is located in Riverdale adjacent to Southern Regional Medical Center.Since that time, he has developed radiation oncology centers in the communities of Austell, Newnan, Griffin and in downtown Atlanta. Each center has received praise from patients and physicians for providing state-of-the-art treatment in a warm community atmosphere.
As Medical Director of Radiation Oncology Services, Dr. Ray provides leadership for program development at these free-standing centers.Among these programs are a Quality Improvement program that on three occasions resulted in accreditation for all the centers by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations; brachytherapy programs that provide permanent interstitial prostate implants at area hospitals as well as the acquisition and implementation of high dose rate therapy. Each of the radiation oncology centers is a member of the Atlanta Regional Community Clinical Oncology Program, and Dr. Ray is seeking designation for each center as a participant in the Georgia Cancer Coalition.
Dr. Ray is a Co-founder of Independent Physicians Strategies, which provides specialized consultative and management services to metro-Atlanta oncology practices. He serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Georgia Oncology Partners, LLC, an independent physician association composed of 74 medical and radiation oncologists in practice throughout the state.Additionally, he serves as a board member of Georgia Oncology Partners Research and Education Foundation, Inc., an organization operated exclusively for charitable, scientific and educational purposes. In 2000, Dr. Ray was elected a fellow in the American College of Radiation Oncology.
