    David Potter, head of sales at ClientLogic, confirmed that workers had been told that the centre would be closing.

    He said that the decision would cause the loss of 300 jobs in the UK but conceded that the figure referred only to the full-time employees of the company.

    He added that there would also be a number of agency and contract workers who would be out of work when the centre in Great Northern Road closed.

    Agency workers are short-term and temporary staff employed to make up numbers when needed. Contract workers are employed for either a specific period or for a specific job.

    Mr Potter said: "Our client, BT, has decided to move its technical help desk away from ClientLogic to another service provider, HCL, in India.
