Joe Marx, a Houston resident for 52 years and Past Chairman of the ASM Texas Chapter 1958-1959 died peacefully on July 2, 1994.His forty two year career in the steel industry began as an analytical chemist with Sheffield Steel of Texas in Houston.He advanced to the Inspection Department and became supervisor of the metallurgical observers and inspectors.He organized their Non Destructive Testing Group which was vital to the production of alloy steel plate (HY-80 &100) used for the Navy's atomic submarines, surface combatant ships as well as Nuclear Quality steel products.He organized classes to teach non destructive testing for certification in various level required.He retired from Armco's Southwestern Steel Division as Chief Inspector, Metallurgical Dept.
Mr. Marx was a Life Member of the Houston Engineering & Scientific Society, and ASNT Greater Houston Section in which he was a Fellow, Lifetime Honorary Member and past National Director.He also served at one of the first Trustees for the Charles F. Lewis Memorial Fund of the ASM Houston Chapter for 17 years.Additionally, Joe was Lion for 37 years and served as President of the Southwest Club in 1964 and 1989.
Formed in 1977, the IPIA's role continues to be, to promote education of oilfield related personnel in the methodology of nondestructive evaluation of oilfield tubular goods (OCTG) and other materials that can be inspected with existing technology..
This collection will serve to continue the role of the IPIA, and in the tradition of Mr. Marx to promote education as can be seen by his life's work in our industry.
