John P. (Jack) Lockwood, a volcanologist and chief science consultant for the movie Dante's Peak, has had a distinguished and varied scientific career.He served with the U.S. Geological Survey for twenty years before founding his own geological consulting firm, Geohazards Consultants International, Inc., which specializes in volcanic hazards appraisal and risk management.He is a fellow of the Geological Society of America (GSA), The International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI) and the American Geophysical Union (AGU).He received his bachelor's degree from the University of California at Riverside in 1961 and went on to earn his doctorate from Princeton University.His work on volcanic hazards has taken him to Indonesia, Italy, Columbia, Cameroon, Rwanda, Zaire, The Philippines, and other foreign countries.In addition to his duties as president of his consulting firm, Dr. Lockwood serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Hawaii, teaching volcanology classes and advising master's and doctoral candidates.He has given numerous lectures on geologic hazards and has served as a technical consultant on various film, video, and print media projects.

An emergency team of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), of which Lockwood was a member, was sent to the area when signs of increased volcanic activity were noticed.
