March 9, 2007: P. Patrick Leahy, the Associate Director for Geology at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and a noted scientist, has announced that he plans to retire in April, 2007, after 33 years with the agency, USGS announced on Wednesday, March 7, 2007.After his retirement, Leahy plans to continue working as the Executive Director of the American Geological Institute, effective on May 2, 2007.Leahy was previously the USGS Acting Director from June, 2005, to October, 2006, and earlier in his career at the agency, he was the Chief of the National Water-Quality Assessment Program.Leahy has conducted research in geology and hydrology in 35 countries, he has helped governments develop mapping systems and discover natural resources.He has recently conducted research in Antarctica and Afghanistan.Leahy has written or co-written more than 60 publications on various geological topics.Leahy received his doctorate in geology in 1979 from the Rensselaer Polytechnic institute.
