Sheltered under a large tent was the table of John Kerr, a Ballard winemaker exhibiting one of the most unique wines of the day -- his Cambodian Red Syrah.

Mr. Kerr, a Vietnam veteran, made the wine with the express purpose of donating some of its proceeds to veterans who don't qualify for government benefits.

He was drafted into the Army in 1969 while attending Moorpark Junior College.Mr. Kerr became a repairman for Huey transport helicopters. He also flew more than 2,300 hours of combat missions, often as a door gunner, and was awarded a Purple Heart after being injured in combat and discharged in 1971.

"When I came home, I got a rude welcome," he said.Mr. Kerr was told he was ineligible for medical benefits, and encountered animosity from antiwar protesters when he tried to return to college.

With some chemistry and biology training but no formal wine study, Mr. Kerr began to make wine at home and moved to Monterey in 1980 to work professionally in the field.Today, he and his wife, Joan, own and operate J. Kerr wines, a small production winery that specializes in Chardonnay and Syrah.

While Mr. Kerr said he is best known for his Chardonnay -- his 1991 production of 400 cases sold out in three and a half days -- the Cambodian Red, which has four Hueys flying into the sun on the label, is close to his heart.

"It's my way of giving back," he said.He has organized a committee of veterans who will distribute 17 percent of the profit from the sales to veterans who need help.

On the back of the bottle, Mr. Kerr penned a message to fellow veterans.
