Beth Krakower, founder of CineMedia Promotions, moderated a panel discussion that included Didier Deutsch (a Grammy nominated producer of over 500 albums and a staff producer for Sony Legacy), Toby Pieniek (an executive at Milan Entertainment and founder of a law firm specializing in intellectual property and entertainment law), and Steve Ferrera (Senior Director of A&R at Capital Jazz & Classics which includes Blue Note and Angel Records).

Didier Deutsch spoke of his vast experience as a producer of Broadway and film soundtrack albums.A very attentive audience heard Didier tell the story of the making of the film score and soundtrack album for Taxi Driver, which he produced.Didier's explanation of the challenges involved in bringing together all of the creative aspects required to complete a project of this scope gave attendees a rare glimpse into how these highly talented people approach their work.Didier also spoke of the evolution of the soundtrack business since the 1960s and shared some very interesting stories about the Broadway soundtrack albums he's produced which include A Chorus Line, Kiss Me Kate, and The Sound of Music.

The audience asked the panelists to describe how the competitive nature of the soundtrack album industry is changing and what future trends might develop over the coming years and into the new millennium. Each panelist shared their unique insights into the business but they all agreed on this point-that having talent isn't enough, and persistence and a bit of luck are other important ingredients to success.

"Ever since I was a kid, I always had in mind to come to this country," says Grammy Award-nominated record producer Didier C. Deutsch."My initial goal was to become a movie director.Instead, I became a record producer and musicologist.Makes sense: music was always an integral part of my life."

Deutsch, who cites Paris-based American deejay Sim Copans as being a major influence on his musical development, was nominated for a Grammy in 1994 for his production of the 12-CD set, "Frank Sinatra: The Columbia Years (1943-1952)--The Complete Recordings," the most ambitious project ever initiated by Columbia Records until then.

Born in Arcachon, France, in 1937, Deutsch lived the war years in hiding, barely escaping being arrested by the German authorities. After the war, while pursuing his studies, he began writing articles about American music for a number of French publications, and lectured at the United States Information Services in Bordeaux and at the American Cultural Center in Paris.

Shortly after his arrival in New York in 1962, he began a career in journalism, writing for a wide range of magazines and newspapers about the arts, with a special emphasis on the theatre, movies, and music. As a reviewer, he has been covering the Broadway musical scene for more than 30 years.

In 1973, after spending some time in public relations in the private sector, Deutsch became publicity director at CTI Records, the jazz label created by producer Creed Taylor, working with artists like George Benson, Bob James, Grover Washington, Jr., Freddie Hubbard, Paul Desmond, and Chet Baker, among many others.
    ...
In a career that has since entirely focused on the music side of the business, Deutsch held various publicity and managerial positions at Tappan Zee, RCA, WEA International, and Atlantic. While at that label, he produced the boxed set "MJQ 40," marking the Modern Jazz Quartet's 40 years in the music business.

In 1986, he began working as a reissue producer for Legacy Records. As part of his activities with that label, he supervised the reissue on compact disc of many of the titles initially released on CTI, as well as some of the soundtracks and Broadway cast albums recorded for Columbia.

Among his most notable achievements, in addition to the Frank Sinatra and Johnny Mathis boxed sets, he also produced a four-CD boxed set of Tony Bennett, marking the singer's 40 years in the industry, as well as numerous recordings by the many artists signed to both Columbia and Epic.On many of those, he also authored the liner notes that put the recordings into their proper historical perspective.

Currently, Deutsch is preparing the CD reissues of the Broadway cast albums of "A Chorus Line," "A Little Night Music" and "Threepenny Opera," as well as an expanded version of Jerry Goldsmith's score for Star Trek--The Motion Picture.
