Climbers will go to the summit of the volcano on Friday, said Greg de Nevers, the scientific studies coordinator for the Mount St. Helens Institute, which is running the climbing program.

"It was a wonderful quake," de Nevers said."If you had been standing on the rim of the crater, you would have felt it, but it wasn't a problem."

The earthquake didn't dislodge rocks or create any other climbing hazards, Nevers said.

"We want to help people connect with the volcano," said Greg de Nevers, scientific coordinator for the Mount St. Helens Institute.

Beyond the stunning sight of watching an active, erupting volcano restore itself, de Nevers said, there is the opportunity to learn how nature itself recovers -- how plants find root on a moonscape and birds flourish in what appears to the naked eye as a devastated wasteland.

"It's an amazing place, and we want people to have the full experience," he said.

Greg de Nevers, scientific study coordinator for the institute, said the U.S. Forest Service is underwriting the institute by paying his salary and that of a volunteer coordinator. The agency also provides space for the institute at Gifford Pinchot National Forest headquarters in Vancouver and monument headquarters in Chelatchie Prairie. "That's a statement and an indication of the Forest Service's commitment to standing up this nonprofit partner," he said.
