Mr. Cyr said buildings older than 50 years old have to be reviewed by the state to determine historical significance.Buildings older than 75 years old are eligible for placement on the state historical registry.Two of Olean's elementary schools are older than 75 years old.

Typically, the exterior of the building receives the most scrutiny when considering renovations or additions to historically significant structures, said Mr. Cyr.
