Boyer ready to take on county chaplain position
...
FREEPORT - Despite the controversy that has arisen over his appointment, Boyd Boyer is excited to be assuming his new position as Stephenson County Board chaplain.
"I'll do my best to serve when needed," Boyer said.
...
Some are concerned about Boyer assuming the role because he has been a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Lena for 20 years.Boyer insists the position will be nondenominational.
...
Boyer's appointment was approved at the County Board meeting in June.Boyer does not feel the initial debates regarding the position will jeopardize his ability to perform his duties.
...
"I think the discussions in that regard are being handled," Boyer said."I get a lot of positive remarks that it is a position that has been needed for a long time. ...I have a lot of people praying for me and the position.A lot of people are giving me encouragement."
As chaplain, Boyer will serve as a liaison between the county and the religious community and open a line of communication with local religious officials. He also will attend local religious-themed events or other events deemed appropriate by the county.
Boyer's first official action as chaplain was to attend the Stephenson County Prayer Luncheon last Tuesday. At the event, he offered prayers about upcoming issues of importance for Stephenson County, such as union negotiations, the budget process and economic development concerns. He offered these prayers based on prayer requests he received from Blum. These requests came from Stephenson County Board members.
In addition, Boyer offered more general prayers about the future well-being of the county.
"I prepared some devotions and I shared those at the luncheon," Boyer said."I quoted from Proverbs, Chapter 3: Verses 13 to 16 about seeking wisdom from God to take care of our needs.Happy is the man who finds wisdom. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her."
Blum said Boyer likely won't be attending the County Board meeting in July because it is too soon after the approval of his appointment.
...
Boyer said he plans to take the chaplain position very seriously.Prior to this appointment, Boyer served on the County Board for 13 years, his last four years as chairman. He resigned last year.
"It is actually appropriate," Boyer said.
