    Foraker, Joseph Benson, soldier, lawyer, governor and United States senator of Cincinnati, Ohio, was born July 5, 1846, near Rainsboro, Highland County, Ohio. He enlisted in 1862 as a private in Company A, Eighty-ninth Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He served until the close of the war, at which time he held the rank of first lieutenant and brevet captain. He was elected judge of the Superior Court of Cincinnati in 1879, and resigned on account of ill health in 1882. In 1886-90 he was the thirty-fourth governor of Ohio. He was again nominated for governor and defeated in 1889, and in 1897-1909 he was a United States senator.

    FORAKER, JOSEPH BENSON (1846- ), American political leader, was born near Rainsboro, Highland county,, Ohio, on the 5th of July 2846.He passed his early life on a farm, enlisted as a private in the S9th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in July 1862, served throughout the Civil War, for part of the time as an aide on the staff of General H. W. Slocum, and in 1865 received a captains brevet for efficient services during the campaigns in North Carolina and Georgia.After the war he spent two years at the Ohio Weslcyan University and two years at Cornell.In 1869 he was admitted to the Ohio bar and began practice in Cincinnati.He was a judge of the Cincinnati Superior Court from 1879 to 1882. in I883 he was the Republican candidate for governor of Ohio, but was defeated; in 1885 and 1887, however, he was elected, but was again defeated in 2889.He then for eight years practised law with great success in Cincinnati.In 896 he was elected United States senator to succeed Calvin S. Brice (1845-1898); in 1902 was re-elected and served until 1909.In the Senate he was one of the aggressive Republican leaders, strongly supporting the administration of President MKiislcy (whose name he presented to the Republican National Conventions of 1896 and boo) in the debatespreceding, during, and immediately following the Spanish-American War, and later, during the administration of President Roosevelt, was conspicuous among Republican leaders for his independence.

    Benson retired last week as U.S. Marshals Service Chief Deputy for the Eastern District of Tennessee.

    At 51, Benson has served as a U.S. marshal for more than 26 years.He has been assigned to various offices, primarily in Tennessee and Georgia but, was sent on special assignments around the country as a member of the U.S. Marshals Service Critical Incident Response Team.

    Benson was awarded the U.S. Marshals Service Director's Distinguished Service Award for his work following the Sept. 11 attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C., as well as his work following the Oklahoma City bombing.

    "Being a member of the Critical Incident Response Team was probably the most rewarding experience of my career," Benson said."Sheriff Berrong has been kind enough to notify the Marshals Service of his willingness to allow me to assist (the response team) in the future should the need arise."

    Benson grew up in Blount County's Lanier community.He is the son of Charles and the late Goldie Benson.He is a 1968 graduate of Lanier High School and joined his older brother, former Blount County Deputy Sgt.Joe Benson, in a law enforcement career working part-time for then Blount County Sheriff Bob Carroll.
