Senator David Angus is a partner in the Montréal office of Stikeman Elliott where he has practiced law since 1963.
He was appointed Queen's Counsel in December 1984.
He is head of the firm's Shipping and Insurance Group.
He is a member of the Corporate and Commercial section in the Montréal office.
He has extensive experience in all facets of maritime, insurance and commercial law.
He has a special expertise respecting government regulation of insurance companies and other financial institutions and with matters of corporate governance of public companies and institutional investors.
Senator Angus is recognized by Lexpert, the Canadian legal directory, as a practitioner "repeatedly recommended" in the shipping and maritime law and international arbitration sectors and has also been recognized by Euromoney's Guide to the World's Leading Shipping and Maritime Lawyers 2002.
Also, he is recognized as having the highest rating ("AV") under the Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings.
Professional Activities
The Senate of Canada: Senator Angus was summoned to the Senate of Canada in 1993.
He is a member of the Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources and is currently its chairman.
He is also a member of the Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs, a member of the Senate Committee on Conflict of Interest for Senators and a member of the Executive of the Canada-US Inter-Parliamentary Group (Canadian Section).
Senator Angus was appointed Emeritus Lawyer (Ad. E.) by the Quebec Bar in 2009.
Memberships: Senator Angus is a member of the Montréal, Québec and Canadian Bar Associations.
He is an honourary life member of the Canadian Maritime Law Association, of which he was President from 1989-1992.
He is a titulary member of the Comité Maritime International and served on its Executive Council from 1994-2001.
He is a Past Chairman of the Association of Average Adjusters of Canada.
Directorships: Senator Angus has served on the boards of a number of Canadian public and private corporations, including Air Canada from 1985 to 2004, and has extensive experience with audit, corporate governance and compensation committees of corporate boards.
He has participated actively in three Senate Banking Committee studies on corporate governance and is a frequent lecturer and speaker on the subject.
He currently serves on the boards of directors of a number of Canadian private corporations.
Senator Angus also participates actively in community and public service organizations and is a director of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Homes Foundation, of which he was President from 1978-2001.
He is Chairman of the board of the McGill University Health Centre and Past President of the Montréal General Hospital Corporation.
He is President of the St. John Salmon Club of Gaspé and a Past Chairman of the Mount Royal Club.
