    "I may have induced Adam to try the school, and then he said maybe we could graduate together," recalls the elder Zucker.

    University officials were receptive to the idea.

    The older Zucker, a member of Columbia's tennis team in the 1940s, still plays the game.A widower, he lives at Westin Club, a senior community in Marlton.

    After leaving Columbia, Zucker went on to become vice president of manufacturing with A.H. Schreiber and Co.Inc., a swimwear firm in Riverside.

    Adam Zucker, who has earned degrees in political science and Spanish language and literature from Columbia College, the undergraduate division of the large urban school, said he aimed for a Columbia degree from the time he was in eighth grade.

    Adam Zucker parlayed his Spanish proficiency into a semester in Madrid and spent one summer in Spain and another in Cuba.Last summer, he worked for the U.S. Consulate in Barcelona, Spain.

    This summer, he'll be leading a group of 15 high school students on a trip to Argentina and working on a Habitat for Humanity project there.
