    Biggest is a dose of common sense, said Dr. Scott Zittel, an emergency room physician at Shasta Regional Medical Center.

    Both doctors point out what seems obvious: Don't mix drugs and alcohol -- especially with potentially dangerous recreational activities like boating.

    "Most people that get bit by rattlesnakes, they're being foolish," Zittel said.

    Even sober, some people chase down and trap rattlesnakes.Bad move, Zittel said.

    "Most of the bites we see are on the hands or feet," Zittel said.

    Scott Zittel, M.D. Board Member

    Scott Zittel, D.O., joined VEP in 2006 and now serves as one of the Board of Directors. Born and raised in Folsom, California, Dr. Zittel graduated from Folsom High School in 1987, then completed his B.S. degree at Cornell University in 1991. He received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and Michigan State University Emergency Medicine Residency in 1999. He currently serves as Shasta Regional Medical Center's ED Medical Director and also heads Shasta's Center Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Clinic. In addition, he has worked with Redding Medical Center/Shasta Regional Medical Center Emergency Department since 1999. In the past, Dr. Zittel served as the Medical Director for Air Med Team/ Reach Air Medical Services (2002-2006. Dr. Zittel is Board Certifified with ABEM 2000(American Board of Emergency Medicine).
