Last fall, in his efforts to educate legislators about the danger phytophthora poses, New York Farm Bureau vice president Paul Zittel gave State Senators Catharine M. Young, R-Olean, and William T. Stachoswki, D-Buffalo, a tour of ruined vegetable fields in Eden Valley.
...
In 2005, Zittel lost over half of his high value pepper crop, and in 2006, the losses continued despite a near perfect growing season.
"We weren't devastated because we had swapped some land with a neighboring dairy farmer," said Zittel, who operates Amos Zittel & Sons Inc. on 200 acres in Eden with two brothers, two sons and two nephews.
Using trickle irrigation, they can produce more than 1,700 per bu. per acre, and they use plastic on about 100 acres.Zittel's alternative crops of cabbage, sweet corn and lettuce don't generate the same income per acre.
"We know in the future it's going to get worse because growers in New Jersey and Michigan have told us so," he added."Unless we take action this year, we're on a collision course for our specialty, high dollar value vegetables in New York, " Zittel said.
