  Department director Jerry Zimmerman gave members of the County Legislature's Public Safety Committee some background on the standards during a Wednesday committee meeting and said new mandates for record-keeping promises to boost the workload for the existing staff.
  
  He said the caseload standards are not mandated, but his staff is reaching burnout and the time is coming when the officers will no longer be able to do the job of supervision and investigation.
  
  Zimmerman pointed to the example of recent changes in sex offender laws that sometimes add two more years to the usual three year probationary term.He said the standards would require 1.5 more workers to cure the department's caseload deficiency, but he asked for the Committee's direction and guidance in finding a solution and suggested adding just one new staff position at a minimum salary of $16,000.

  Some committee members asked about the feasibility of hiring part-time employees and retirees to do the job, but Zimmerman told them the investment in mandated training for the workers makes that solution impractical.
  
  Vecchiarella said he hoped to bring the new position to the Vacancy Committee and discuss budget implications with the County Administrator Jack Searles, before bringing a resolution to the floor in July, when more details could be discussed.He then called for an executive session to discuss the request in light of a personnel-related matter.
