"We hope to create a strong network of Americans and Israelis working together," said Jeri Zimmerman, director of the Federation's Center for Israel and Overseas, which is facilitating the launch. Though smaller groups and individuals have tried to bridge the gap between the two communities in years past, the effort to begin this month is the first attempt on behalf of the organized Jewish community and Federation to deal with the problem head on, noted Zimmerman.

But she -- and the team of Israeli volunteers that she is working with -- may face an uphill battle as they attempt to bring the two groups together via fundraising, and cultural and social events.

"We were ahead of the curve" in terms of donor accountability, said Jeri Zimmerman, director of the federation's Center for Israel and Overseas .

The Center for Israel and Overseas receives about 100 applications a year and gives about 20 grants, according to Zimmerman.

Zimmerman said that the new system produces greater accountability: "I think it's a hard time to make a strong case for going back to the way things were."

Jeri Zimmerman, of the Center for Israel and Overseas at the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, said its August treks are on track."Trips have been postponed in the past, but we're not there yet," she said.

A group of Jewish high school students, whose 10 days in Israel coincided with flare-ups in Gaza and the conflict in Lebanon, returned July 16 as planned, Zimmerman said.No one pulled their children out, she said.

Jeri Zimmerman, director of Federation's Israel and Overseas Center, said the money raised will go to the Jewish Agency for Israel's Fund for the Victims of Terror.

"We are inviting the community to celebrate Yom Ha'atzmaut on the holiday's actual date, along with our brothers and sisters in Israel," said Jeri Zimmerman, center director.

"Having everything and everyone in the same place gives us a more coordinated approach to connecting Jews to one another and linking them to their heritage here, in Israel, and in places like the former Soviet Union and Argentina," said Jeri Zimmerman, director of the center.

Upcoming missions will provide the broadest sense of Israel travel, said Zimmerman, and create a more positive perception of Israel in the community.
