    The rapidREHAB program allows physicians to easily identify and refer patients who could benefit from a rehabilitation evaluation by filling out a referral form that is faxed to Dr. Jerald Zimmerman, Chief of Rehabiltation Medicine.The day Dr. Zimmerman receives the referral the patient will be called and scheduled for an evaluation within 48 hours.Dr. Zimmerman will then call the physician after the evaluation to coordinate the patient's care.Dr. Zimmerman will prescribe any necessary tests and medications and immediately write orders for the patient to have physical, occupational, or speech therapy in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine.Dr. Zimmerman will also follow the patient's progress closely and consult with his or her physician frequently.

    The same rapidREHAB approach is also being applied to inpatients at our Medical Center.Patients referred by physicians for rehabilitation consultations will be seen within 48 hours.Dr. Zimmerman will call the patient's physician as soon as the consult is completed to coordinate the patient's rehabilitation care in the hospital andhelp meet their needs when they are discharged.

    Dr. Jerald Zimmerman is an internationally recognized specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation.He graduated with a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University, worked as a biomedical engineer in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Northwestern University School of Medicine, studied at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois and has a master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in bioengineering and biomechanics.Dr. Zimmerman was an orthopedic resident at the University of Minnesota, chief resident in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University and is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation.He is an examiner for the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and has served as an Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at both UMDNJ/New Jersey Medical School and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
