Zimmerman, who has been lobbying the General Assembly for some control of fireworks, said Tuesday that Mishawaka police received 204 telephone complaints about fireworks between June 26 and July 7, 2003.
She didn't have statistics easily available for more recent years.
There was little police could do about most of those complaints because of Indiana law regarding fireworks.
Fines for setting off fireworks during the times they are illegal will be $25 for the first offense, $50 for the second offense and $100 for all other offenses each year.
However, Zimmerman said, if fireworks result in fire and damage, the city can assess fines of $2,500 for the first offense and $7,500 for more offenses.
