"In those days, our high school enrollment was not what it should have been, and the program was important for recruiting students to our school," said Al Zimmerman, admissions director at St. Joseph's.
Now, the all-boys' high school is at capacity with enrollment at about 970, and summer school also is a sellout, with an enrollment of 500 boys and girls.
If you encounter a Prep student, chances are about even that he went to summer school there after the seventh grade, Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman said girls have been part of the summer program all along."Seventh-grade boys like seventh-grade girls and, besides, the girls often have younger brothers who may become interested in the Prep," he said.
At St. Joseph's, the summer school program also is a means of acquainting minority students with the school, and need-based scholarships are available.
"There's a real interest among a lot of private schools in recruiting quality students of color to their schools.
