In a concert demonstration called "How to Listen to Jazz" on Sunday, April 3, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Society, EHS member Albert Zeiger, Ed.D., will use words, music, and instruments to encourage casual listeners to become active participants, able to respond to jazz on both musical and emotional levels.Al explores the mechanics of jazz improvisation by following the different themes and variations of famous jazz standards and demonstrating the characteristics that distinguish jazz from other music.In a live performance, he will display his virtuosity on alto and tenor saxophone and clarinet.The donation of $10 for this Society fundraising event includes refreshments.
Al received his doctoral degree from Columbia University exploring the similarities between classical music and jazz.He has been a professional musician most of his life, playing with big bands and at jazz clubs.He has written many articles on both jazz and classical music and is a former education editor of Metronome Magazine.Al taught at Five Towns College and in Bethpage Public Schools for more than 35 years, and for the past 10 years has presented lecture-performances at venues throughout Long Island.
