According to H. Glenn Zeigenfuss, IIW's standards officer, the ISO/IIW agreement is good news for the welding industry. "Since the agreement was first signed between ISO and IIW in 1986, only four IIW standards had been published as joint ISO/IIW standards; however, last year we published eight standards and we anticipate an increase next year under the provisions of the new agreement." IIW has collaborated with ISO Technical Committee (TC) 44, Welding and allied processes, for the past thirty years to prepare and assist in the formulation of International Standards.

Representatives from the national welding standards arena view the ISO/IIW agreement as a positive sign that could usher in increased involvement of technical experts in the development of international welding standards.

Zeigenfuss also notes the enhanced cooperation within the last tens years between IIW and international groups such as ISO and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). The three groups met on July 12, 2001 in Slovenia and as IIW's representative, Zeigenfuss, reports, "the focus of the semi-annual meeting was to coordinate standards development activities within the context of welding in order to avoid duplication and identify areas of partnership among the groups' technical committees."

"Now that global trade is the order of the day, it is imperative that coordination occur in this extremely important technical discipline," said Zeigenfuss. "Welding is used in every industrial endeavor, from shipbuilding to computer chip making, automobiles to toasters and bridges to pacemakers. Our standard of living depends on our ability to make quality permanent joints in the products we produce."

Established in 1947, ISO is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies with representatives from some 140 countries. As a non-governmental organization, ISO's mission is to promote the development of standardization and related activities in the world with a view to facilitating the international exchange of goods and services, and to developing cooperation in the spheres of intellectual, scientific, technological and economic activity.
