"We've got a great product, and we wanted people who have never gone to a game to sample it," Conquest co-owner Robert Zeig said.
In other words, give the fans entertainment, not just football.
The Conquest has unveiled promotions considered unusual for af2: concerts after five of the team's eight home games -- including a planned hourlong show by Bon Jovi after the July 23 game against Manchester -- and performances by the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders at the home opener on April 16.
Zeig said his team's fresh thinking can help the Conquest succeed where other Capital Region sports franchises have failed. Seven local pro teams have folded or relocated in the past 14 years, including the Arena Football League's Albany Firebirds, who moved to Indianapolis in 2000.
The Conquest is in the final year of its lease with Pepsi Arena. Zeig said the team wants to stay "without a doubt" but won't begin serious negotiations until the second half of this season.
"Teams haven't been successful, and not because the fans didn't want it to be a success," Zeig said.
...
Meanwhile, Zeig said the Conquest has doubled its advertising revenue to $600,000 this season by putting all of its games on television and radio, a first for the franchise.
But at its most recent home game, Albany drew only 4,387 fans against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on May 8, the smallest announced crowd in the franchise's three-year history.
Zeig pointed to one reason for the small turnout -- the team's record.
...
Though the Conquest has been aggressive in promoting its rock concerts, Zeig insisted the front office places enough emphasis on the football product.
...
"I think we've proved we pay attention to the team on the field," Zeig said.
...
That prompted Zeig and his seven partners to take on a more active role and do things differently.
Zeig, the advertising manager for the New York Yankees in the mid-1980s, said his group is more willing to spend money than Margenau or his predecessor, Glenn Mazula, who founded the Conquest and sold the team after its first season.
...
"We're operating the team totally differently than the first two years," said Zeig, who this season has started serving as the team's general manager.
...
Zeig declined to reveal how much the team is spending on promotions this year.
...
Zeig said he believes the Conquest will make money next season, if not this one. He said the team has increased its season-ticket base to 2,400 fans from 1,300 last year. And he sees plenty of room for growth.
"I won't be happy until we're at 10,000, 11,000 or 12,000" fans per game, Zeig said.
