After 29 years of his divine dedication at Trinity Lutheran Church that helped build a new sanctuary, school and a learning center, pastor Peter Zeig is leaving the pulpit.

Referred to affectionately as Pastor Pete, Zeig, who was a crutch for many souls affected by the Sept. 11 attacks and who has tirelessly served a long list of community organizations since being installed as pastor in 1975 at the church, 3016 W. Vine St., said it was time for a new church leader to shine.

His last day at Trinity is Feb. 15.

At the age of 60, Zeig is content with all he has accomplished.

"I'm really not interested in new challenges," Zeig said. "It's a good opportunity for someone else to step in. It's been a great experience here. I wouldn't trade it for anything."

Six years after Zeig began serving the church, a school was built under his leadership. It only started as first grade, with one teacher and just six students.

It has since advanced from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade with 201 students.

"It's one of the most exciting things this church is ever done," Zeig said.

In 1983, the church raised the money to build a new sanctuary because of the growing congregation. The former building was just too small to accommodate everybody.

"Sometimes people would leave because they couldn't get in," Zeig said.
    ...
When Zeig wasn't holding services or overseeing school operations, he rolled up his sleeves and went to work in the community.

He served as a board member for organizations including the Osceola County YMCA, Osceola Children's Home and Osceola Council on Aging.

He was president, treasurer and emergency fund coordinator for the Kissimmee Area Ministerial Association. Serving in that capacity, he remembered witnessing the impact of Sept. 11, when many local residents lost their jobs because of a downturn in tourism.

"It was an absolute overwhelming time," Zeig said. "People were standing in line for gas, food and shelter."

He was also past president and past secretary of the Rotary Club of Kissimmee.

Having served as chaplain for the Kissimmee Fire Department for the last 10 years, Zeig said it's one post he will continue to serve after he retires.
    ...
An interim pastor will preside over the congregation until a new church leader is named, which could take up to a year, Zeig said. To the one chosen, he offered some advice.

"We don't remember Sept. 10, but we remember Sept. 11," said Kissimmee Fire Department Chaplain Peter Zeig, who is a pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church.

More than 400 New York firefighters, police and port authority officers were killed.
