Dr. Christopher Zed, associate dean, Strategic and External Affairs, and head, Post Graduate and Hospital Programs, explains that the majority of the people treated in the international outreach programs have advanced medical diseases (e.g., dehydration, malaria, blood disorders, rare viruses, dengue fever, HIV, and oral cancer) that either do not exist in North America or whose frequency is rare. "Certainly exposure to these diseases is invaluable to GPRs and students for their clinical experience. Combine this with their presence and legacy in the host country and it becomes evident that the arching benefits of the international program are a two-way street."

Zed is referring to the three main components upon which the international program are founded: community service outreach, sustainability and knowledge transfer. Zed is aware of the numerous agencies around the world that reach out to help less developed countries, but insists that UBC Dentistry's program is unique.

"Not only do we work in the field treating immediate disease, but our program also considers dental disease and its burden, in relation to overall health and wellness," he says.

The UBC team focuses on the long-term impact of its involvement in collaboration with local health care or educational institutions in the host country. Through developing oral health programs for patients and sharing its expertise with local peers (doctors, dentists, nurses), the UBC team advances the knowledge of the community, with the primary goal of improving the quality of their daily life.

"UBC Dentistry is committed to supporting these international initiatives that provide enhanced learning for our students and improve the health of those with whom we come into contact. Zed asserts.

Christopher Zed (BSc'87 MBA'90 DDS'94) is typical of the Zed family spirit.Though he grew up in Saint John, New Brunswick, Zed came to Halifax to study at Dalhousie. He stayed for three degrees, his entire post-secondary education. And though he now lives in Vancouver, where he's the Associate Dean of Dentistry at University of British Columbia, he is still an active supporter of Dalhousie University. In fact, he's the youngest member, at 37, of Dalhousie's Heritage Society.

"Giving is about recognizing the value of my education and reseeding the benefits for today's students," Zed says during a visit to Dalhousie. The Faculty of Dentistry invited him to speak to a senior class on, among other topics, the potential of future generations of dentists as "oral health care providers" or a "first line of defence" in the management and treatment of disease instead of merely fixers of teeth.

Zed is 'reseeding benefits' for future students by making a bequest in his will to support an endowment at Dalhousie.Zed wants the income created by the endowment to fund student scholarships. It's part of his effort to ensure students continue to enjoy the solid educational opportunities Dalhousie offers, such as the diverse choice of programs and top faculty.

"Dalhousie is still doing a fabulous job," he says.

He took Dal's MBA program because of its excellent reputation in finance and international business.Similarly, Dalhousie's lead role nationally and internationally in oral surgery attracted him to that program. This is one person who is still very conscious and thankful to have had the chance to study diverse but complementary programs at the same university. Now, he draws on "business acumen" developed through his MBA to navigate the economic and organizational channels of the dental profession and the health care system. With this knowledge, Zed will be much more effective in expanding dentistry's role in overall health care.

"I was also lucky enough to realize at a young age that it's important now to plan ahead," Zed adds. The ability to plan and the discipline to see that plan through are both products of his MBA education as well, he says.

For someone with the skills to lead it's surprising to hear him admit he had no grand vision for his time at Dal.
