Andrei Pavlovich Zass was enlisted by his parents to the army upon his birth.In 1779, he was already a colonel of Life Guard Cuirassier Regiment.He took part in 1787 Campaign against the Turks, and then commanded Pereyaslavl Horse Jager Regiment (1779-1793).In 1793, he was given command of the Kiev Horse Jager Regiment and fought the Poles for the next two years.He was promoted to major general on 12 February 1797 and served as chef of Starooskolski Musketeer Regiment between 15 December 1796 and 8 April 1797.On 15 November 1802, he was appointed to command Ekaterinoslavl Cuirassier Regiment and the next year, on 6 June 1803, became chef of Pereyaslavl Dragoon Regiment.He kept this position until 8 April 1814.In late 1805, he was sent to the Danube Army and took part in the opening moves of the campaign in 1806.On 27 June 1806, he was promoted to lieutenant general.In 1809, during Bagration's offensive to the Danube, Zass invested and captured fortress of Ismail.
