John Zandy is Chair of the firm's Employment and Benefits Department, and has been a partner since 1988.John advises and represents employers in a diverse range of industries and other endeavors, including health care (hospitals, nursing homes, home health care, assisted living, ambulance), large and small companies in manufacturing, technology and other service industries; colleges, universities, and other private educational institutions; banks, public utilities and charitable entities.
John has extensive experience in advising employers on a wide spectrum of today's labor and employment issues and has special expertise in labor relations, including negotiating collective bargaining agreements, handling grievances and arbitrations and proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board, and defending against union organizing campaigns.John also devotes a significant part of his practice to defending employers in cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, discrimination, wrongful discharge, wage and hour, and OSHA violations, and in advising them on human resource issues such as discipline and discharge, family and medical leave, union-free policies, employment and non-competition agreements, and ADA compliance.
Before joining Wiggin & Dana, John was a partner for several years with a law firm in New York City, and he also worked for the National Labor Relations Board and the Solicitor's Office of the United States Department of Labor.He has a graduate degree in labor law from the New York University Graduate School of Law, where he was the Elias Lieberman Labor Law Fellow, and he graduated with honors from Valparaiso School of Law and received his undergraduate degree in economics from Miami of Ohio.
John lectures frequently on labor and employment law issues, and is a member of the Labor and Employment Law Sections of the Connecticut and American Bar Associations.He has been a contributing author of a well-recognized book on the Americans with Disabilities Act and the ABA's Occupational Safety and Health Law treatise, and is on the Advisory Board of the Disability Leave & Absence Reporter.
