Huang stands near her diary left behind in the rubble of Building G, which was destroyed by a fire Thursday evening.Huang left the diary at the scene because, she said, it probably smelled like smoke.

"We don't pay tuition anymore, so it's like we don't matter," said William Yu, a Binghamton accounting clerk who graduated from BU in December 2005.

Yu and his girlfriend, Wen Juan Huang, who graduated from BU in May 2005, have been staying with friends in Vestal since a fire tore through their apartment building at the Riviera Ridge complex Thursday evening.

Huang and Yu said they have relied on personal contacts from BU to help them.

Yu said he was one of the first to call 911 and report the fire and led firefighters to the apartment where smoke was seeping through the front door.Firefighters have blamed the fire on clothes left too close to a space heater.

Yu and Huang returned to the Jensen Road complex Saturday after their housemate told them they could get their cars.
