Harpist Dan Yu, representing the People's Republic of China, took home the top prize at the USA International Harp Competition this year. The competition, which takes place once every three years, is the only multi-national harp competition in the United States. To win the gold medal, Ms. Yu triumphed over 36 of the world's best young harpists from 14 nations. Her rendition of Alberto Ginastero's Concerto for Harp and Orchestra, the required fourth and final piece of this grueling two-week competition, was clearly the crowd's favorite.

Born and raised in Shenyang in the province of Liaoning and now a graduate student at Indiana University seeking her Artist's Diploma, Ms. Yu, 27, has never owned a harp.As the gold-medal winner, however, she receives a $55,000 grand concert harp hand-carved from rare African rosewood and gilded with 800 sheets of 24-karat gold leaf. The harp, specially made by Lyon & Healy Harps of Chicago, was donated by the Victor Salvi Foundation.Ms. Yu also won debut recitals in London, Paris, Tokyo, New York's Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, and Fukui, Japan.
