"Improved water management is critically needed in this region of the country," adds Mr. Yokoyama.

"Bangladesh lies in the low floodplains of the great Ganges-Jamuna-Meghna river system, which poses extraordinary challenges that affect the livelihood of the rural poor," said Kenichi Yokohama, an ADB Project Engineer.

ADB Project Engineer Kenichi Yokoyama said, "By introducing a consultation and participation mechanism, the people, especially the women, are more motivated to address their problems on their own."

Bangladesh's Rural Water Needs

The team was led by water resources specialist Kenichi Yokoyama and others who have expertise on river ecosystem, river economy and sociology, etc.

"Improving agricultural productivity is one of the key challenges facing Nepal, as it has the lowest productivity among neighbouring countries," said Kenichi Yokoyama, a senior ADB water resources specialist.

Opportunities also exist to sustain the benefits of water management infrastructure by seeking to engage these households in routine O&M of these facilities in return for their use of public land," says Kenichi Yokoyama, an ADB Project Engineer.
