Her predecessor with the swim club was former Hayfield state diving champion Amber O'Reilly, who served as an inspiration for Yoerges. In turn, Yoerges also helped two Patriot District rivals - Stephannie McKinney of Annandale and Katie Gordon of Lake Braddock - find their calling on the boards."I brought them into diving, and they really didn't know how to do anything. And then they sprouted and became just amazing divers," said Yoerges. The just-graduated Hayfield senior was amazing in her own right, going from a novice diver to a consistent contender in the district finals. "I used to be a really timid diver, but I feel like I've grown a lot," said Yoerges."There's always more to learn."Yoerges was also a member of the varsity field-hockey and girls lacrosse teams at Hayfield in her junior and senior years after playing JV in her first two years at the school. "She's one of those players who adds so much through her attitude and spirit," said coach Sabrina Yarie, who coached Yoerges for one year in field hockey and two in lacrosse."She not only works hard to reach her maximum potential but also helps and encourages her teammates to reach [theirs]."Yoerges admits that her senior season, in which she was a captain, was a challenging one in which she missed games due to all-state chorus commitments. "I'm definitely not the best athlete on the team, by far. There are some amazing athletes on the team.I'm just there for team spirit," she said.Yoerges was given the Coach's Award for Outstanding Leadership in lacrosse this season. She had a 3.89 GPA at Hayfield and was a member of several peer leadership groups as well as National and Spanish honors societies.Yoerges will head to the University of Florida this fall to study communications. She hopes to continue to dive with the school's club program. "[Diving] used to be my cause of stress," said Yoerges of her first seasons of competitive diving. Now, when she's on the board, Yoerges said it's a source of serenity.
