    STMicroelectronics Opens Chip Design Center in Singapore

    STMicroelectronics said it would invest nearly $ 17.3 million in a chip design center in Singapore , joining other global chip makers such as NEC and Philips Semiconductors that have established design and research facilities on the island.

    ST executives said the design center would commence operations by the end of 2000 and would focus on smart-card ICs.The company plans to hire about 30 engineers for its research and development activities as well as testing and evaluation of smart-card components.
