Richard Yiap, Director of BrainQ, is a speed reading teacher who has helped business people increase reading speeds by over five times on average.
Richard uses several techniques to overcome the causes of slow reading which include mind wandering, back-skipping, reading few words at a time, fixating on single words, and not preparing to read.
The first, and most powerful aid, is to use a pointer.Running a pointer along the text as you read helps prevent back-skipping and evens the flow of your reading.Richard recommends a pen (not your finger) to help read with more clarity and connection.
Another helpful technique is to look at what you are reading and understand what you want to get out of it.Richard compares lack of preparation with trying to piece together a jigsaw puzzle without looking at the picture of it.
