First flu season in the age of anthrax hits Michigan - [Cached Version]
Published on: 11/22/2001    Last Visited: 11/22/2001

Steve Yarows, a physician with Chelsea Internal Medicine, said it's too early to tell whether people with the flu will worry that they have anthrax. But none of the patients with respiratory illnesses at his clinic in the past month have asked about anthrax, he said.

"When the actual influenza season starts, it might be more disturbing," he said.

Doctors say dozens of other viruses are more likely to cause flu-like symptoms than anthrax.

But the fear of the disease, particularly in areas like south Florida where the first anthrax death was reported, has gripped patients.
