With a three-paragraph statement yesterday, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Sunday Ehindero, withdrew Vice President Atiku Abubakar's Aide-de-Camp, Mr. Abdul Yari, a chief superintendent of police, for an alleged breach of security.

Police sources told THISDAY that Yari was being investigated for his links with some shadowy political groups known to be at the vanguard of promoting his boss' ambition of succeeding President Obas-anjo.Specifically, the former ADC was said to have been linked with the activities of the Turaki Vanguard, a campaign group said to be promoting the Vice President's ambition. He was alleged to be the conduit through which funds were being channeled to the group, and other underground political structures that had mounted a media campaign for Atiku's dream of becoming Nigeria's president in 2007.

But THISDAY investigations reveal that Yari might have been the latest casualty of the President's determination to clip the wings of his deputy and reduce his (VP) capacity to realise his presidential ambition.According to sources, signs that Yari was in trouble began to manifest yesterday morning when the President reportedly informed his deputy that his (Atiku's) ADC was on his way out of the Villa. The Presidential meeting was said to have been followed by another meeting between the IG and the Vice President about 8am during which Atiku was told that his boss had directed that his ADC be withdrawn.

Yari, who had been ADC to the Vice President since 1999, according to Aso Rock sources, began to walk the path to trouble when he became jittery about feeding security agencies with information on his boss.

The governor was said to be suspicious of Yari whose status as the Vice President's ADC had given him access to power with which he had started exercising some influence in the state, particularly in Lafia, his home town.Responding to the development yesterday, an aide of the Vice President, Mallam Shehu Garba, said his boss would not be drawn into any confrontation over the withdrawal of his ADC, explaining that Atiku remained committed to the success of the Obasanjo administration, a commitment which he said could not be realised by any bickering at the Presidency. Yari is the eighth casualty of the cold war between the President and his deputy, which began to manifest early last year, with a presidential directive that all campaigns for 2007 general elections should seize.
