Serena Yang

Yang had been the owner of Nhiavu Enterprises for al-most three years before fire destroyed the building Fri-day night.

Yang said he likes the location and would like to rebuild, but will meet with his insurers before determining his next course of action.

It's not the first time Yang has been forced to consider his options following a tragedy.About two years ago, his 10th Street home was ransacked by robbers and his car stolen while he attended the annual Hmong celebration at the Manitowoc County Expo grounds.Two months after that, his son's car, a gift from another family mem-ber, was stolen and heavily damaged.The crimes were never solved.

"I always hope for the best," Yang said Saturday."I don't know why these things happen to me."

Yang and his wife Serena have five children.Three live at home, one is in college and another is married.He came to this country in 1976 from Laos, and worked for the Unisys Corp. in Utah for more than three years.The family has lived in the Lakeshore Area for about a dec-ade.Yang earned degrees in computer science and busi-ness administration from Lakeland College, near She-boygan, in 1996.

He owned a kitchen wares store on Washington Street prior to opening Nhiavu Enterprises.

Manitowoc Fire Department Capt. Dave Wilke said Yang left his store about 7 p.m. Friday, with the fire reported about an hour later.Yang said nothing appeared amiss when he left for the evening.

Firfighters arriving from the fire station less than a block away found the building heavily engulfed in flames.
