In the late 80's, while the world had little knowledge of computer-based instruction and training, Allen started his graduate study in the Department of Linguistics at Ohio University.The focus of Allen's graduate coursework was the feasibility of Computer-aided Language Learning and Natural Language Understanding.
As a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Ohio University, Allen designed and developed two ESL (English as a Second Language) reading software applications for ESL students to practice English grammar and reading comprehension.Allen earned a Master's Degree in Linguistics from Ohio University in 1991 after two years of research and study.
In 1993, Allen started a software consulting firm, Aspiration Software, Inc., in Atlanta, Georgia, which specializes in design and development of corporate training software.Since then, Allen has worked with ExecuTrain, NCR Human Interface Technology Center, and IBM Learning Services among others and created some high quality training courseware and authoring tools.In the last 5 years, Allen has created two enterprise-authoring tools for IBM Learning Services and IBM Lotus Corporation.Allen was one of the architects who designed IBM Learning Content Repository System in 2003 to 2004.Allen has also worked on the development of two IBM Learning Management Systems (LearningSpace 5 and IBM Lotus Learning Management 2).
Allen's in-depth knowledge in e-learning includes SCORM, AICC, Section 508-compliance specs, and designing authoring tools that support DBCS and BIDI languages.Allen has actually written codes for Section 508-compliance to make authoring tools accessible to visual- and hearing-impaired users.The programming languages that Allen has worked with include VB, C/C++, VB.Net, ASP.Net, C#, and Java.
